Publishing 'old' material

Sometimes writers ask me if we re-publish 'old' material. One lady recently asked if we would consider looking at her book from the '70s, published by Kevin Mayhew, with a view to publication.

Mm, this is a difficult one. Occasionally I do get sent 'old' material, but we have never yet used any. I'm not saying we wouldn't, but generally the following reasons apply, to name a few:
  • language and speech change over the years
  • relationships change, eg the way we related to our parents is just not the way our children relate to us
  • some issues change - not all, but most do, at least in severity and meaningfulness
  • technology has changed exponentially over the last 30 years, so a book with no mobile phones, i-players etc would seem out of date
  • books are much shorter and snappier now - our kids need continually moving plots to keep their interest!
  • kids need to relate to the characters - they particularly need protagonists who act and feel and think like they do (or like people they know)
In our novels, we need to be relevant to the young people of today. The way they live their lives is so different to the children of the '70s (count me in there!), that it's unlikely a book from that era will hold their attention, unless it is a 'period piece' eg Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' stories from the '50s.

Much better to write a new book with the same plot/ theme, if still relevant, with new characters. And don't write a book about Roger and Susan, who cycle to work in the family business :-)

Trust that helps!

Being a good example

In church on Sunday, the preacher urged us to be good examples to younger Christians - he challenged  us: are we living lives that will encourage younger members of the family in their walk with God?

It made me think - am I living a life that shows forth honesty and integrity; am I passionate about caring for my family, for other people and for mission; am I spending my money in ways which are honouring to God; do I meet with other Christians for mutual encouragement; am I standing up for what is right? In short, am I being salt and light where the Lord has placed me?

Complaining, becoming lethargic, selfish and spending more time than I should with the telly or pc is not difficult and is a slippery slide - I was glad to be reminded of Paul's words to Timothy, "In all things you yourself must be a good example."

The Birthday Shoes by Mary Weeks Millard

She hopes they might not fit, but discovers instead that they hold an amazing secret! Join her as she goes on a series of adventures, making friends and some exciting discoveries about God along the way.

For information on Beech Bank Girls III, Christmas is Coming!, see previous post entitled 'Books for autumn release' :-) I can't wait for this book to arrive. When I first read the manuscript, the word that came to mind was 'inspired'. It really does touch on important issues in a way which is so encouraging - friendships, eating disorders, the true meaning of Christmas to name but three.  Eleanor told me that she had prayed for inspiration for this book more than for any other she has ever written. Bearing in mind that this is Eleanor's 40th book, that's saying something. I do truly believe that all three of these books could touch many girls' lives. A wonderful way to show the girls that you love, that it is great to be a Christian!

Dernier Publishing Books for Teens

I thought it would be a good idea to give information about all our books in one place for easy reference - the next blog will be chick lit for 10-14s, then books for 8-11s. Firstly, here are our books for kids 12+:
The Only Way by Gareth Rowe
When a miserable, disaffected teenager meets the beautiful and mysterious Lily, he discovers a new way to live, the only way. Later, when Lily's life is in danger, he is willing to risk everything to save her, but time and circumstances are against him. How can he live, if she doesn't survive? A brilliantly-written story of hope for young people.
This really is a great story with a subtle message - perfect to give to young people who have no church background and who may never have thought about God in their lives. This is a book to sow seeds. Also great for church kids who could do with a bit of encouragement that Jesus is not just for the middle classes! Who could you buy it for?
Here are some reviews: “The girl is mysterious and it's good that you don't know much about her. The boy has quite a hard life; I liked the bit where he had to live off the land. The Christian side of the book is subtle; I think it would be helpful to someone who is unsure about their faith. This is a very good book with some exciting moments.” - George

“I enjoyed this book and it was an interesting read because the author made really exciting things happen.” - Naomi

“The Only Way hooked me straight away . . . Brilliant and funny writing.” - Jackie Kay MBE, Professor of Creative Writing, Newcastle University

Plus a review from G P Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Shadowmancer: “The Only Way is a moving, fast paced, gripping and genius piece of writing. A 'must read' for everyone.”

London's Gone by J. M. Evans

London has been bombed by terrorists. Maria watched in horror as the smoke rose from the direction of London. Now she must make a hazardous journey to safety with her sister and a Christian friend, but is anywhere safe now? For Maria, the journey is also inside herself as she begins to discover a side to life that she did not know existed. A thrilling drama full of suspense.

This books is kind of topical - after the bombing there are riots, which spread from London out to other large cities and surrounding areas. Have you read it? It's for teens, but you might find it challenging too. Equally suitable for kids with no previous knowledge  of God and for Christian young people. Non-threatening and low cringe factor!

Some reviews: “I just couldn't put this book down!” - Jilly

“Very exciting, full of atmosphere.” - Eleanor

“Scary, because it could actually happen.” - Laura

“I found the story very tense and compelling.” - Sandy

Riots in the City

Terrible news about the riots in London and elsewhere in the UK, and especially shocking that so many children are involved. Watching the news, seeing cars and buildings burn, hearing eye-witness accounts, seeing the gangs of hooded youths on our streets - it is difficult to believe that this is really happening so close to home. We live near London and have friends who are bus drivers and work in Lewisham, Peckam and neighbouring areas; one of the shops I was in on Saturday, in Orpington, was looted last night. It is both sobering and a bit frightening. And the end is not yet in sight.

"I see violence and riots in the city, surrounding it day and night, filling it with crime and trouble. There is destruction everywhere, the streets are full of oppression and fraud." BBC news bulletin? Nope, words from Psalm 55 (Good News Bible). Human nature hasn't changed over the centuries, but neither has God. The message of good news is the same too - we need to reach out to our young people while they are young, so at least they know there is a choice to be made. How can they know if they have not heard?

We can all be youth workers - if we can do nothing else, we can at least buy children we know a Christian book or a DVD, or a leaflet explaining the gospel – NOW while there is still time. Or else they will grow up and be influenced by what they see around them . . . most of which is far from godly. We are privileged in this country to have a vast selection of Bibles, books and Christian literature which can sow seeds, even change lives. Well, no, that's not true, only God can change lives, but he often does use the written word to touch hearts. Try our website, www.dernierpublishing.com for books for 8-16s, or visit your local Christian bookshop for lots more choice for every age group. Jesus told stories - why not give kids a good story which points the way to God? We can no longer be complacent, we need to pray for our young people, and we need to act too - we all need to do our bit, build our part of the wall, one brick at a time.

In our novel 'London's Gone', London is bombed by terrorists. There are riots in the cities and three young people have to make their way to safety, one of whom is a Christian. Have you read it? It's kind of topical. For young people 12+, but you might find it challenging too. Available from your Christian bookshop, if you have one - if not, available from our website. Not sure? Read the first chapter on online. http://www.dernierpublishing.com/londonsgone.php

Author biography - Eleanor Watkins

Eleanor Watkins
Author of the Beech Bank Girls books

Eleanor Watkins is a full-time writer, mother of four adult children and grandmother of four. She lives near Hay-on-Wye on the Welsh borders and has been involved in the farming community all her life. She loves the countryside and natural world, likes people of all ages and travels whenever she can. She has been writing ever since she could put pen to paper. About her writing she says: “I learned very early that words are powerful, that they can make you laugh, cry, hope, be inspired, take you to other places and times – and I wanted to be part of doing that.” Beech Bank Girls, Christmas is Coming! (due for release in the autumn) is Eleanor's 40th book. Read on!

I was born and brought up on a hill farm in the Welsh borders and was closely involved with the farming life and natural world though my childhood. I had a happy childhood, attended the local village primary school and later a somewhat unique and experimental school with an agricultural bias housed in a beautiful mansion house. There I gained a love of words from my English teacher, a first glimpse of a living relationship with God from my history and RE teacher, who is now one of my closest friends and a circle of friends I value to this day. (Not much what you'd call formal education though!)
I am married to George, and we farmed for many years – we still live in the farmhouse although he now runs an export business. Over the years we've had numerous cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, a pig, a goat, aviary birds, tortoises, ducks, chickens, lambs, you name it! I even raised a fox cub once. Now we just have a ginger cat and a pair of cockatiels. Thinking of getting another dog though, maybe a few bantams . . .
I was almost seven when I started school (my parents held out for school transport and taught me to read and write at home before then). I used to make up little stories about characters I knew. My granny lived with us and my stories always featured a granny. I still have some stories I wrote at six, based on the Dick Barton characters we heard on the radio serial at 6.45 each evening. I learned very early that words are powerful, that they can make you laugh, cry, hope, be inspired, take you to other places and times – and I wanted to be part of doing that.

Eleanor holding her two current Beech Bank Girls books. Beech Bank Girls, Every Girl Has a Story, the first in the series, was shortlisted for the Christian Resources Together Awards, Children's Book of the Year 2011, over 12s category :-)

Eleanor with myself (Janet Wilson, left) at the International Christian Resources Exhibition at Sandown Park in May this year.

I was taken to church (Anglican) and always had an awareness of God. When I was 16 a team from the National Young Life Campaign visited our village and I went along with some friends. There I heard for the first time about the personal relationship we can have with God through his son Jesus. I was deeply convinced of my need of a Saviour, but my reaction was that I wanted to enjoy my life and be in control of it, and I headed for the door as soon as I could. However, a friend dragged me back inside and I was counselled and prayed the sinner's prayer. I thought I would immediately become 'good' and was a little perplexed when life went on much as before, However, God had his hand on me and soon began to work on me in different ways and through different people. Over the years I could have been labelled Anglican/Evangelical/Pentecostal/Charismatic/Contemplative, as all those have influenced my walk with God. My views of him have changed a great deal over the years. He has become much bigger, more loving, more merciful, caring, closer and more precious as time passed and I receive more of his wonderful grace.
My interests are mainly books and writing, gardening, the natural world and the environment, grandchildren, family and friends, meeting people, travel. Before marriage I helped in my parents' farming business and studied child care. Since, I've worked with my husband in various enterprises and raised my family, and I wrote all the time, selling my first story at 21, but later also selling something I'd written at 16. I write fiction and non-fiction, mostly for children and young people.”

Books for autumn release

Books for Autumn release
The front covers of our two new books which are due for release in October have now been finalised – here they are . . . we are delighted with them! Please do pray that many children will enjoy these books and be encouraged and inspired.

Here's a bit about the Beech Bank Girls III, from the cover:
Christmas is coming! Along with the excitement, life holds its challenges for the Beech Bank Girls. Holly faces the reality of financial crisis at home; Rachel is worried about her sister; a sledging incident shakes the girls - and a very different nativity play brings home the true meaning of Christmas. Family, friendship and faith issues – the Beech Bank Girls face them together in this, their third exciting book. Chick lit for 10-14s.”

We have been delighted with positive reviews from young readers – here's one:
An amazing, heart warming story about six normal girls who go through every-day situations, but at the end of the day they realise that the best solution is to turn to God. This story shows that God is an amazing father who really cares for us and our problems, no matter how big or small they are. A definite 10/10.” - Ellie

And a bit about Living in Hope:
Shema can now go to school and his dream of becoming an airline pilot has moved one step closer - but he and his family and friends still have many exciting and dangerous challenges to face in the Village of Hope. Frida is tricked into leaving her brother and sister, Sam is falsely accused of stealing, a football match has an uncertain ending; will their faith triumph? The thrilling sequel to I Want to Be an Airline Pilot, set in rural Rwanda.” For 8-11s. Here are some reviews:
This is the best book I have ever read, and I would recommend it to anyone.” - Sophie “Everybody should read this book, because it is amazing, fun, very emotional, and you will learn so many things about how children cope living in Rwanda.” - Matthew “This story is about friends who live in the Village of Hope in Rwanda after the Rwandan genocide. It shows that God will intervene whenever you ask and will change you for ever and ever. It's a brilliant, riveting story.” - Reuben

We didn't pay the children for these reviews! :-)
They really are both excellent stories!
We have had a surprising number of things going wrong with the production of these two books - the proofs were made up with the wrong typeface so had to be re-done. The new proofs were then lost in the post - Special Delivery (guaranteed next day delivery before 1pm) eventually arrived eight days late - all of these things making us behind in our schedule. Several people lost their internet connection for a while during all this, making communication difficult, and I was on holiday! To top all this, Eleanor Watkins, author of the Beech Bank Girls series, has been quite unwell. I feel the Lord is going to use these two new books (and all our others!) and perhaps this is opposition – please do keep praying for everyone involved. Thank you!
