Dark Books v Light Books!

I was chatting to a couple of mums yesterday who were bemoaning the fact that they found it difficult to buy suitable books for their older children. Searching through the shelves at Waterstones, they found that so many of the books contained a lot of 'dark' material. Many contain witchcraft, violence and ungodly relationships. Today's young people are having their minds filled with this, unless we intervene. When I was a child, children's books generally held nothing to harm. Evil was evil, baddies got their comeuppance, girl/boy relationships hardly figured. . . how things have changed! We need good Christian books with decent values for our young people like never before.

According to the Christian Research Association, three quarters of UK Christians were converted before the age of 20. This means that we need to be urgent and diligent in our task to reach as many young people as possible while they are still young; every one needs to hear the good news of Jesus. If you have not done so recently, why not take a look at the books on our website www.dernierpublishing.com and consider if there are any young people you could buy for – neighbours, grandchildren, nephews and nieces, friends, church youth club, local school or library. Words are powerful and who can tell, you may be encouraging future leaders, carers, people who will change the world for the next generation. World Book Day, Thursday 1^st March

Beech Bank Girls on Revelation TV

I don't know if you saw Beech Bank Girls III being reviewed on Revelation TV just before Christmas? The producer kindly sent me the DVD of the programme - it was soooo encouraging! A young lad was interviewing a group of younger children; two girls had been given 'Beech Bank Girls, Christmas is Coming!' to read. Here are a few snatches from their conversation:

I Want to Be an Airline Pilot

“One girl aged 8 from a very difficult background, came to me on Sunday. It was her birthday last Thursday. She was thrilled to bits when she got 3 birthday cards. I think you revealed the dark characters and issues enough to show that evil is really evil, but not inappropriately for the age group; which is quite a hard balance to get. 'Prayer - just do it!'

I wonder if you made any new year's resolutions this year? There has been a lot of talk about 2012 being an important year. There will be the Olympics in London, Euro 2012 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee . . . it will also be the year I turn 50 :-) . . . that is, if the world continues in its present form, because according to some 2012 will be the year the world is going to end! (The end of the Long Mayan calendar apparently . . .)

Now most of us won't worry too much about the Mayan calendar, but Jesus did nonetheless warn us to always to be ready for his return, because nobody knows the day or time.

So I venture to suggest that the best resolution we could make is to pray more than ever before, because God has chosen, at least in part, to meet the needs of his people through the prayers of his children. That's you and me. And perhaps the time is short!

We first produced our 'Prayer - just do it!' booklets to help young people to pray; they are often zealous and enthusiastic, putting some of us oldies to shame. However, many adults have found the booklets helpful too. It's easy to run out of words if you're not sure exactly what to pray for!

Talking about prayer doesn't get it done, but with these booklets, anyone can just do it! And prayer changes lives - well, the prayers themselves don't, but God does, through our prayers. That's a breathtaking privilege and an awesome responsibility.

In his letters, Paul often urges the believers to pray for him. Church leaders today need our prayers no less, not just our local ministers but those in the public eye.

Praying for Missionaries
Missionaries who have left their home in order to share the gospel have particular difficulties to overcome along with the joys of service. As well as our encouragement, they need our prayers.

Praying for the Peace of Jerusalem
The Bible urges us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. One day Jesus will return and restore all things with a new heaven and a new earth, but for now the battle rages for supremacy in the City of the Great King.

All I want for Christmas is . . .

Well it's not something you can buy! At the hairdresser's yesterday the big topic of conversation was of course Christmas . . . we talked about which relatives we were going to see, how our shopping was going and how behind we were with preparations . . . I realised afterwards that I had missed a brilliant opportunity to talk about what Christmas means to me. I just wasn't thinking. If we really thought about what we wanted for Christmas, I wonder what we would do differently?

Eleanor Watkins, author of 40 books!

Back in August we put up a brief profile of author Eleanor Watkins, but as Beech Bank Girls III (recently released) is Eleanor's 40th book - wow, what an achievement! - I thought it would be nice to have a longer piece. Eleanor has kindly written the following fascinating account of her childhood on a farm in the Welsh borders, how she came to follow the Lord, and a bit about her writing career to date. Enjoy! :-)

“I think I was conscious of God from a very early age. As a family we attended an Anglican church; I loved the words and rhythms of the Prayer Book service and often pondered their meanings. Our church was a tiny rural one, looking as if it had been dumped down in the middle of a field, sister to the Parish church in the village and much beloved by the diarist Francis Kilvert, whose books are full of names and places I know well. We would walk to church, wearing wellies in wet weather, over a mile of fields, hills and dips, narrow lanes and streams to cross.

Living in the depths of the countryside reinforced my deep inner feeling that there must have been a master Creator behind the wonder and beauty of the natural world. Our farm perched on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Wye valley, facing the misty blue ridges of the Black Mountains across the river. My brothers and I had a hundred and twenty acres of fields, streams and woodland as our playground and we knew every inch of it; each tree, every bend in the stream, the damp places where golden marsh marigolds and delicate wild orchids grew, the reed-fringed pond where we took our jam jars to collect frog spawn, the best horse chestnuts for conkers. We built houses in trees and dens in bushes, dammed the stream and diverted channels to create islands. We also sometimes did forbidden things, like building fires in woodland, or squeezing through holes in hedges to trespass on neighbours’ land. Looking back, it was an idyllic childhood, free of restriction - we truly ‘walked in Eden.’

Our farmhouse was draughty and sadly lacking in mod cons; one cold tap supplied all the domestic water, heating consisted of open fires and a couple of smelly oil heaters. We read by oil lamps or in bed by candlelight (fire hazard!), the toilet was at the bottom of the garden down a long and shrub-fringed path, scary in the dark, and we bathed in a tin tub in front of the kitchen fire. My parents were hard-working and often hard-up, but our house was full of books and magazines, from encyclopaedias to classics, poetry to farming magazines and children's comics. We all read avidly, studied the things that interested us, travelled to other times and places through the printed page. My brother wanted to be a naturalist, and I knew from very early on that I wanted to be a writer.

A turning point in my life came at sixteen, when three friends and I went to our village hall to see a film and listen to a visiting evangelistic speaker. As the evening progressed I had the growing conviction that these people knew Jesus in a personal way, and, more importantly, that his death on the Cross that I heard about in Sunday services had been for me, personally, and that I needed to make a decision; to accept him into my heart and life or to reject him. I had the uneasy feeling that the former decision might restrict my blossoming teenage social life, so I headed straight for the door when the meeting ended. My friend, though, persuaded me to respond to the altar call, and together we duly stayed behind for counselling. Once pinned down, I prayed the sinner’s prayer with sincerity, and really felt that something significant had happened.

Over the years, I’m amazed at the way God has kept his hand on me through many ups and downs, wanderings and strayings (on my part), heartaches and problems and happy times, and the incredible diversity and wonder and adventure of life lived with Jesus. I’ve met so many amazing people and learned and experienced so much in so many ways, from the joy and wonder of being filled with the Holy Spirit, to the pain of church splits and the hard work of setting up new enterprises. I don’t always understand what God is doing, but I do believe that, in the end, ‘all will be well, and all will be most well, and all manner of things will be well.’(Julian of Norwich)

I’ve written stories since I could hold a pen, and had my first acceptance at the age of 21, when Christian Herald newspaper accepted one of my short stories for the princely fee of three guineas! They took several more, and later published a children's serial which I had started when I was sixteen and finished a few years later when I was looking for something to do during my baby son’s nap time. My first book was published by Victory Press in 1973, the story of a boy and a fox cub. By then I was a farmer’s wife and mother of three small boys, living in a farmhouse in the lee of the Black Mountains facing across the valley to my childhood home. Life was busy, but I persevered with the writing and more books followed with Victory Press. A lean spell in publishing came later in the 70s and 80s, and I turned to short stories and articles, selling a respectable number to various magazines in this country, Australia and the US. Children's fiction was my first love, though, and it was with relief that I discovered Lion Publishing, who helped and nurtured me enormously, and later Scripture Union and Kevin Mayhew.

Beech Bank Girls III: Christmas is Coming!, published this year, is my fortieth book, not counting the dozen or so manuscripts, finished and unfinished, that lurk in my files. I began the Beech Bank Girls stories after reading something similar in secular teenage fiction and wondering how it would work if the girls telling the stories had experienced Jesus in their lives. The first couple of publishers I approached were dubious, then I met Janet through the pages of the ACW magazine, she liked the stories and the rest, as they say, is history. The latest book was inspired by the bitter weather of last winter which started before Christmas – I thought it would be fun to have a pre-Christmas story with a cold and snowy setting. The girls themselves are not goody-goody or super-spiritual, they are ordinary girls who laugh, cry, fall out sometimes, face heartaches, make mistakes, act silly and have a lot of fun. I want the readers, above all, to have a sense of how precious they are to God, how much he loves them just as they are, and to know that he has wonderful plans for their lives.

I write mostly in longhand, in a spiral-bound manuscript book, editing each days’ work later the same day, editing it again when it goes on the computer – and then again, and again…… My three pieces of advice to budding writers? 1. Read. 2. Write. 3. Make sure you have a good editor. I can’t emphasize that enough. However well you think you’ve edited your work, there will always be things you missed, or that could be improved on. Whether a lot or a little needs to be changed, a good editor is a must.

A few years ago, on a trip to New England, I visited Walden Pond and was very taken with Thoreau’s idea of a little hut in the woods, having the fanciful notion I’d like one to write in. My husband, bless him, took this on board and some time later obtained a small wooden hut and set it up in our own woodland. It was a nice idea, but alas!, very little writing has been done there. The grandchildren play in it and I go there occasionally to watch wildlife, or to have a scream or rant without danger of disturbing the family or upsetting the cat! These days, I can’t get by without piles of books, concordances, notes on bits of paper, the phone, and a computer with Google, Amazon and Facebook to provide distraction at regular intervals. Plus a comfy armchair, central heating and a cup of tea, of course!"

Are children becoming animals?

Many people are at risk of giving up on children altogether, a shocking new poll commissioned by Barnardo’s has found. It shows that nearly half the UK population (49 per cent) agree that children today are beginning to behave like animals. ICM Research reveals that the public holds a negative view of all children, despite the majority being well behaved, attending school, taking part in activities and a significant number contributing to their communities and volunteering.

So it seems that our children are facing discrimination. How sad. We all need to feel cared for and appreciated; our young people are not exempt, with perhaps more pressures on them than many of us had to face at their age. There are more family break-ups than ever before, an increasingly immoral society, pressure at school to conform/not conform, more families with financial problems, job uncertainties, job losses . . . It's tempting to wonder what we can do, but if we all go out of our way to encourage our young people whenever we can, and make them feel appreciated, we can make a difference. If you don't know any children yourself, why not buy a Christian book or two for a school library? You could be the means of great blessing!

Often we don't see the results of our prayers, but occasionally we receive good news! Here's an extract from an email I received recently, a wonderful encouragement that the Lord is at work through our books:

“I just want you to know how amazing your books are!

1. One girl aged 8 from a very difficult background, came to me on Sunday. It was her birthday last Thursday. She was thrilled to bits when she got 3 birthday cards. One from Grandma, one from Kidz Klub, and one from the lady who sponsored her book! [Church members sponsored books to give to Sunday School children last term.] The only thing she asked for for her birthday was another book like 'I Want To Be an Airline Pilot'. Grandma bought her 'The Birthday Shoes'. Result: one very happy little girl.
2. One lady who lives 17 miles away from church, came on Sunday. She came because she had read her son's book, one of the Treasure Mystery ones. Her son loves coming to Kidz Klub, and she wanted to see why. At the end of the service she stayed behind to talk to the preacher, and after a long chat with him, she was born again! Wow, wow, and wow again!!”

I hope you enjoy reading about our authors - today, with no further ado, I am delighted to introduce you to Denise Hayward, author of 'Deepest Darkness'!

"As a child I loved reading, and I read all the children’s classics – The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Alice in Wonderland, Heidi, Little Women etc. I also enjoyed Enid Blyton – she gets a bad press now but she drew me into books. Two books that really impacted me were Helen Keller’s autobiography and The Diary of Anne Frank. Probably more than any other book The Diary of Anne Frank inspired me to start writing. For my 13^th birthday I bought a note book with some money I’d had and began to keep a diary. I think I began by trying to record the boring intricacies of my day but quite soon it became a place to write what I thought and felt, how I processed the world. Those early diaries read rather embarrassingly now! I have never been faithful to writing my journal every day but I have more or less kept it up ever since. I still have days when I write reams and occasionally let several days, even weeks, lapse.

I don’t remember when I first wanted to write children’s stories, probably some time in my early twenties. I just know that for a long while I wanted to and then eventually began to put some of the ideas I had in my head onto paper. From the time I was a young teenager I wanted to be an actress, and from the age of 16 acting was a total obsession for me. It was all I wanted to do. I did eventually go to drama school and then had a summer season in the children’s theatre in Butlins. It’s a long story but I learned a lot about myself I didn’t like during that summer. I had been reading Christian books such as Jackie Pullinger’s ‘Chasing the Dragon,’ and Joni Eareckson’s autobiography. I may, at times, have called myself a Christian up to that point but I was not a follower of Jesus and these books brought that home to me. Anyway God sought me out, thankfully, and aged 23 I became a follower of Jesus. And he very clearly led me out of the acting world. It seemed hard at the time but I am glad He did. I wouldn’t have survived as a Christian in that world. That’s not the case for everyone but it certainly was for me.

I think it was probably around that time that the possibility of being a writer began to take hold of me. I certainly began writing more seriously then. I think my first completed work was probably a one woman play about Eleanor Roosevelt. I hoped to tour it around schools but didn’t get much interest – they kept telling me what women they would like a show about. I’ve never been very good at writing on demand. It has to mean something to me. However it began, somewhere in me I knew I wanted to write children’s stories. Of course I discovered writing them is far easier than getting them published! It always seemed like I was playing a game that I didn’t know the rules of.

The inspiration for Deepest Darkness came when my husband, Frederick, and I had a holiday in Canada. We caught the train from Toronto that crosses Canada to Vancouver, on the west coast. We stopped off at the Rockies on the way over then continued on to Vancouver. From there we hired a car and drove around Vancouver Island. We walked in the Rockies, went whale watching, stayed in an old loggers cabin and took boats out to see Grizzly bears along the coast. Throughout the journey the thing that struck us was the wildness and the unpredictability of it. The reality that as we walked we could very possibly stumble across a bear was exciting and scary! All the while, as we faced a wildness that doesn’t exist anymore in Britain, I felt God stirring things in me, facing fears. Not just the fear of stumbling across a bear but a certain fearfulness that gripped me. My fear was not as raw and controlling as Abi’s [from Deepest Darkness] but certainly controlled aspects of my life. God had long been dealing with fear in me. But there is simply something about walking in wilderness that touches something deep. Not just about me, but about the reality that God is not a tame God, and actually, in the depths of who I am, I don’t want Him to be anyway.

But it was in a small place on the west coast of Vancouver Island that the story began to stir in me. Our hotel was virtually on the beach, we had a room looking out to the sea. The beach was beautiful, to me it was paradise. The dark rocks in the sea, the long sandy beach. Behind were mountains and forests. All that part of Canada used to be temperate rainforest but most of it has been logged and there is very little original forest left. But there is some and from the road there was a boardwalk into the edge of the forest. As we walked I wept, the colours, the variety of green and the ancientness of this forest, deeply touched my heart, deeply spoke to me of the One who is the Ancient of Days.

One morning on the beach, the line ‘When I was a child of 9 or 10 I came to this island full of fear,’ popped into my head. And it stayed there. It became a matter of discovering who this person was and what had happened to her. In many ways Dave, Abi’s father, contains strands of my story as much as Abi herself. For me, Deepest Darkness is as much about discovering God is far bigger and wild and real and good than we ever imagine, as it is about one young girl facing her fears and finding God cares. He is enough. He made this wild, incredible planet that He cares deeply about. And yet He knows me and He cares. He intends life to be fully lived and embraced, He doesn’t want us cowering or making a life for ourselves that we can manage. He is too wild for us to tame and life is too huge for us to control but He holds us and lights our way."

Inspirational Posters

A few years ago, when we only had two books (well everyone has to start somewhere!), we produced a couple of posters, so that the exhibition stand we had booked didn't look too ridiculously empty.

Now we have eleven books, by the grace of God, and four posters - all with the aim of encouraging and inspiring young people in their faith and showing non-church kids what they are missing.

Our aim right from the beginning was to set up a publishing company for youth fiction, and as time has gone on our books have taken over just about all our time and energy. We are still proud of our posters though, and it's a shame they have been a bit neglected, because they are such wonderfully unique pictures with a great message. A few words can sometimes speak volumes; who doesn't need to be reminded on a regular basis that the Lord keeps his promises, that heaven is a wonderful place (this is popular with older folk too), that we can overcome evil with good and should keep rejoicing? . . . um, this is speaking to me right now . . .!

Our children (grandchildren, pupils, neighbours, nephews and nieces and friends' children) need to hear these things, just as much as we do - the writer to the Hebrews urges us to encourage one another daily - well here's a great way to do that, even if we can't be there in person.

Acorns in the park

It's that time of year! Under the oak trees in my local park, the ground is littered with acorns. Some fall on the path and get squashed by dog-walkers like me, some are eaten by squirrels, some might take root then get mown down – some will grow into beautiful oak trees! Books Change Lives

I received a most encouraging email from a lady whose church members sponsored books for their Sunday School children, many of whom come from a local estate. "It's now several weeks since we presented the books to our children. This morning I asked how they were getting on with them. They were very enthusiastic and have been swapping them round when they've finished their own. Most of these kids are reluctant readers, too. One girl, non-Christian family, no support or interest at home, very violent background, told me her grandma had read her book, 'I want to be an airline pilot', and wanted to know where she could buy some of the others." Gareth is our latest author; his first novel for young people, The Only Way, was released earlier this year. I asked Gareth to write a little bit about himself, which I am delighted to reproduce here:

“I grew up on the ragged edges of a big city. It was a place where the houses, shops and warehouses merged into scrubby and unloved wasteland. It was a place where those who knew where to look could find the crumbling remains of factories and air raid shelters, ancient oak trees to climb, wild blackberry bushes big enough to crawl inside and ancient churches where the gravestones seemed to whisper secrets from a different age. It was a place through which there ran an old canal where the waterlilies grew and the swans came to give birth to their young each summer. When I was younger I wanted to follow the canal out of the city and far away into the countryside. I wanted to have adventures and to write stories about them. I still do. When I grew up I really did leave the city. For a while I lived in a castle surrounded by a deep river; later I lived on a farm in the hills; now I live in a little brick house with a yellow door and fruit trees in the garden. I’ve been a banker, a shelf stacker, an accountant and a teacher but my real vocation is to sit at the window and watch the rain fall from the heavens and water the garden.

I grew up in Bootle on Merseyside in the 1970s and 80s. We had no money but lots of love and freedom. I was a devotee of Enid Blyton and rather fond of Asterix. I tended to get whatever books I could find in the local jumble sale so it was a bit hit and miss. I was an only child but had lots of cousins who were good substitutes for brothers and sisters. I was not from a church family but God came knocking pretty early on in my life. I never felt at home in the city and the family holidays we had in the mountains of North Wales were sublime moments of joy followed by devastation as the city closed in on me on my return. This idea of the natural world as a pointer to the divine runs throughout the book [The Only Way] but rather than following a quest up into the mountains we see nature breaking out in the city: in Lily’s garden, in the waterlilies on the canal, in the flower growing in the cracked pavement.

I decided to become a writer at whatever age it was that I read my first Enid Blyton book. Once the decision was made I was content and so felt no compulsion to do anything about it – like actually put pen to paper. Eventually I began to write poetry as a teenager and have continued to do so ever since. In 1999 I began the MA in Creative Writing at Northumbria University and started to think about writing prose (mainly because it was impossible to fulfil the word count with poetry). I started with short stories, moved on to a turgid and dull campus novel and ended up trying to write fiction for young teenagers. 'The Only Way' is my first published novel.

I become a Christian something like this: during the summer holidays one year I went to a group called CCC (Children’s Christian Something?) at the local church; I’ve no idea how or why. Later a friend who was in the Boy’s Brigade made it sound cool so I joined and started going to church. Skip a few years and I’m at a Billy Graham Crusade at Anfield: Mission England (was that ‘82? – if so I’d be nine). Anyway that’s when I made the BIG DECISION and dedicated myself to Christ. Afterwards I carried on with church, BB, Truth, Beauty and God until I left home and went to university.

By the time I left home, a) I was pretty unconvinced about all this religion business and soon started using the A-word (agnosticism) b) I can actually remember making the decision to ‘try life without God for a while’. Of course now I realise that it is logically inconsistent to try to dump a god who (probably) doesn’t exist – but I’m making no pretence to logic here. Anyway I’d have probably found the idea of being strictly logical suspect and un-artistic. Needless to say, university (Durham by the way) wasn’t much fun. I wandered around In Despair for three years while friends and family concluded I had gone mad. Somehow I got both a degree and a job in accountancy but things continued to get worse. After a couple more years I decided to go back to God.

The next decade was much more fun. Externally it involved getting married, having children, becoming a teacher, regular communion, prayer and reading the scriptures. Internally it was a reorientation away from self and towards God. Unfortunately it is a process which is nowhere near complete: if embodied existence is a process of turning bits of clay into gods – I’m at the stage of being rather like the character Morph from the 1980s TV show ‘Take Hart’.

I’m married to Sue who looks after our two daughters, Rebecca aged six and Isobel aged two. The only thing Becky likes more than school is playing schools: because then she gets to be the teacher! Isobel has just started playgroup and for her the main attraction is the endless supply of paints coupled with the lack of parents hovering around protecting the walls from her artistic endeavors.

I enjoy walking in the countryside, reading and staring out of the window. Recently I bought a dilapidated piano which I sometimes abuse frightfully in the name of making a joyful sound. In the last year I have taught in high school and prison and I am now back at university studying to work with people with learning disabilities.

Eternal Destiny

Last Sunday, being 9/11, the preacher at the church I attended talked about disasters. None of us can fail to have been moved by the images we have seen over and over again of the Twin Towers falling and the statistics which followed of the number of those who had died. The piece of cold data which particularly struck me this year was the number of children whose mum or dad didn't return home from work that day. Three thousand. A boy in my step-son's class at school lost his dad.

I am sure we have all thought of and prayed for those left bereaved by that terrible tragedy.

Equally, a good friend of mine lost one of her colleagues in the 7/7 London bombing. She was one of the last to be identified as dead, from DNA alone – she had almost certainly been close to one of the bombers in the train, going to work like any other day.

Even on a small scale, tragedy can strike quickly and with no warning. Most of us probably know someone who has lost a loved one in a freak accident, or been struck down by a disease while they were still young. Nine years ago my first husband contracted meningitis and in five days he was gone, leaving me with three children aged 10, 15 and 17. I can't even begin to tell you how terrible that was.

The truth is, we don't like to think about these things. If we do think about them, it's usually to hope that it doesn't happen to us or anyone we love – or happen again. But when forced to think, most of us, at some time or other, ask the question, 'Why?'

Jesus' answer to the question 'why' takes us to a different perspective, our preacher told us on Sunday. When Jesus was talking about the 18 people who died when the Tower of Siloam fell he said to the people who were listening, 'Do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?' The answer was, no. Then he went on to say to his listeners that unless they repented they would all likewise perish. Sobering words. Death comes to all of us. Our lives are like a flower of the field, James tells us, echoing the words of one of the psalmists – blooming briefly for a moment, then quickly gone.

Fortunately, there is hope. Because God, who is love, reached down to us in the person of his son, Jesus, who died in our place (we deserve it, he didn't), making the way for us to enter eternity spotlessly clean . . . to a beautiful place . . . forever. We have a choice. Death - for those who have turned to God - is to 'Take hold of the life that is truly life', as Paul wrote to Timothy. Physical death is not the end. I find that incredibly moving.

Should this thought of eternal destiny colour our lives? I think we can all answer that for ourselves.

“I was born in Weymouth during the war. Due to my father's work in underwater weapons, our family travelled between Weymouth, Gloucester, Ross-on-Wye, Scotland, and finally settled in Bath in 1951 where I completed school and then won a scholarship to an Independent school for senior years. At this school I grew to love English literature, history and biology, and became an avid reader. I also remember my mother reading poetry, such as Hiawatha, aloud to me and my two brothers on Sunday evenings.

My parents were Christian believers and took me to church and Sunday School. However, we did not have a very happy family life and for some years I was sexually abused by a family member. I became very withdrawn and almost unable to communicate with people. I lived in a private world of books and stories I made up in my imagination. I wanted to know God and longed to know His love, so went to meetings and services regularly.

When I got my first job as microbiologist I met my first real friend, who took me to church where I met Jesus in a way I had not experienced before. Everything began to change in me. I grew in my faith, became more confident as a person then did my nurse's training.

My background in nursing and midwifery took me to Uganda to work. I met my first husband there and together we served in Congo and England in full time Christian work. My first husband worked for Scripture Union in bookshop management. He developed a neurological disease which left him paralyzed and wheelchair bound for many years. He died in 2000. After his death I became a short term missionary in Rwanda and Uganda. I married Malcolm in 2006 and we retired to live in Weymouth. I have three married children and five grandchildren. Our first daughter, Joy, sadly died in Congo where we were missionaries.

When I have time I love to do watercolour painting, cross stitch embroidery, knitting and crochet. I also love photography, gardening and reading, and walking in the countryside or by the sea. I still travel regularly to Rwanda, Uganda and other African countries on short term missions, particularly in the area of reconciliation. My inspiration for I Want to Be an Airline Pilot and Living in Hope was working with child-led families in Rwanda. Although the places and people in these stories are fictional, they are based on real life situations. I find a joy in story telling and I love to hear about people's lives and how they arrived at where they are now. Just when I finish one project another seems to be in my mind – I guess this is the Holy Spirit inspiring me!”

Christian bookshops - use them or lose them!

According to last Saturday's Daily Telegraph (3rd September), the number of bookshops in Britian has almost halved since 2005 - that's total bookshops, not just the Christian sector of the market.

The newspaper blames heavy discounting by supermarkets, the rise of internet retailers and the popularity of e-readers for the closures. Apparently there are now 2,178 bookshops left in Britain, compared with 4,000 in 2005, leaving 580 towns without a bookshop.

Christian bookshops are not immune; many have closed in the last few years and although some have closed and re-opened under new management, they all need our support. As in everything else in life, if we don't want to lose them we must use them! Christian publishers need your support too. Tesco and ASDA are unlikely to be stocking Christian books in the near future . . .

I know it's not Christmas yet, but once you have made your prezzie list, resolve to pop down to your local Christian bookshop - if you're still fortunate enough to have one - and buy your Christian books, Bibles, daily reading devotionals, CDs, posters, DVDs, mugs, tea-towels, candles, stationery and calendars there. You might even be able to do all your Christmas shopping under one roof! What better way to celebrate the birth of our Saviour than to point to Him with Christian gifts to friends, family and neighbours? If you don't have a bricks-and-mortar shop within travelling distance or prefer to shop from your computer, find a bookshop with an online store and do the same, or at least buy direct from the Christian publishers!


Ok, so you might not be able to do your shopping at Christian Solutions in Jersey . . .

Publishing 'old' material

Sometimes writers ask me if we re-publish 'old' material. One lady recently asked if we would consider looking at her book from the '70s, published by Kevin Mayhew, with a view to publication.

Mm, this is a difficult one. Occasionally I do get sent 'old' material, but we have never yet used any. I'm not saying we wouldn't, but generally the following reasons apply, to name a few:

language and speech change over the years
relationships change, eg the way we related to our parents is just not the way our children relate to us
some issues change - not all, but most do, at least in severity and meaningfulness
technology has changed exponentially over the last 30 years, so a book with no mobile phones, i-players etc would seem out of date
books are much shorter and snappier now - our kids need continually moving plots to keep their interest!
kids need to relate to the characters - they particularly need protagonists who act and feel and think like they do (or like people they know)

In our novels, we need to be relevant to the young people of today. The way they live their lives is so different to the children of the '70s (count me in there!), that it's unlikely a book from that era will hold their attention, unless it is a 'period piece' eg Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' stories from the '50s.

Much better to write a new book with the same plot/ theme, if still relevant, with new characters. And don't write a book about Roger and Susan, who cycle to work in the family business :-)

Being a good example

In church on Sunday, the preacher urged us to be good examples to younger Christians - he challenged us: are we living lives that will encourage younger members of the family in their walk with God?

It made me think - am I living a life that shows forth honesty and integrity; am I passionate about caring for my family, for other people and for mission; am I spending my money in ways which are honouring to God; do I meet with other Christians for mutual encouragement; am I standing up for what is right? In short, am I being salt and light where the Lord has placed me?

Complaining, becoming lethargic, selfish and spending more time than I should with the telly or pc is not difficult and is a slippery slide - I was glad to be reminded of Paul's words to Timothy, "In all things you yourself must be a good example."

When I first read the manuscript, the word that came to mind was 'inspired'. It really does touch on important issues in a way which is so encouraging - friendships, eating disorders, the true meaning of Christmas to name but three. Eleanor told me that she had prayed for inspiration for this book more than for any other she has ever written. Bearing in mind that this is Eleanor's 40th book, that's saying something. Terrible news about the riots in London and elsewhere in the UK, and especially shocking that so many children are involved. Watching the news, seeing cars and buildings burn, hearing eye-witness accounts, seeing the gangs of hooded youths on our streets - it is difficult to believe that this is really happening so close to home. We live near London and have friends who are bus drivers and work in Lewisham, Peckam and neighbouring areas; one of the shops I was in on Saturday, in Orpington, was looted last night. It is both sobering and a bit frightening. And the end is not yet in sight.

"I see violence and riots in the city, surrounding it day and night, filling it with crime and trouble. There is destruction everywhere, the streets are full of oppression and fraud." BBC news bulletin? Nope, words from Psalm 55 (Good News Bible). Human nature hasn't changed over the centuries, but neither has God. The message of good news is the same too - we need to reach out to our young people while they are young, so at least they know there is a choice to be made. How can they know if they have not heard?

We can all be youth workers - if we can do nothing else, we can at least buy children we know a Christian book or a DVD, or a leaflet explaining the gospel – NOW while there is still time. Or else they will grow up and be influenced by what they see around them . . . most of which is far from godly. We are privileged in this country to have a vast selection of Bibles, books and Christian literature which can sow seeds, even change lives. Well, no, that's not true, only God can change lives, but he often does use the written word to touch hearts. Jesus told stories - why not give kids a good story which points the way to God? Eleanor Watkins is a full-time writer, mother of four adult children and grandmother of four. She lives near Hay-on-Wye on the Welsh borders and has been involved in the farming community all her life. She loves the countryside and natural world, likes people of all ages and travels whenever she can. She has been writing ever since she could put pen to paper. About her writing she says: “I learned very early that words are powerful, that they can make you laugh, cry, hope, be inspired, take you to other places and times – and I wanted to be part of doing that.” Beech Bank Girls, Christmas is Coming! (due for release in the autumn) is Eleanor's 40^th book. Read on!

“I was born and brought up on a hill farm in the Welsh borders and was closely involved with the farming life and natural world though my childhood. I had a happy childhood, attended the local village primary school and later a somewhat unique and experimental school with an agricultural bias housed in a beautiful mansion house. There I gained a love of words from my English teacher, a first glimpse of a living relationship with God from my history and RE teacher, who is now one of my closest friends and a circle of friends I value to this day. (Not much what you'd call formal education though!)

I am married to George, and we farmed for many years – we still live in the farmhouse although he now runs an export business. Over the years we've had numerous cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, a pig, a goat, aviary birds, tortoises, ducks, chickens, lambs, you name it! I even raised a fox cub once. Now we just have a ginger cat and a pair of cockatiels. Thinking of getting another dog though, maybe a few bantams . . .

I was almost seven when I started school (my parents held out for school transport and taught me to read and write at home before then). I used to make up little stories about characters I knew. My granny lived with us and my stories always featured a granny. I still have some stories I wrote at six, based on the Dick Barton characters we heard on the radio serial at 6.45 each evening. I learned very early that words are powerful, that they can make you laugh, cry, hope, be inspired, take you to other places and times – and I wanted to be part of doing that.

I was taken to church (Anglican) and always had an awareness of God. When I was 16 a team from the National Young Life Campaign visited our village and I went along with some friends. There I heard for the first time about the personal relationship we can have with God through his son Jesus. I was deeply convinced of my need of a Saviour, but my reaction was that I wanted to enjoy my life and be in control of it, and I headed for the door as soon as I could. However, a friend dragged me back inside and I was counselled and prayed the sinner's prayer. I thought I would immediately become 'good' and was a little perplexed when life went on much as before, However, God had his hand on me and soon began to work on me in different ways and through different people. Over the years I could have been labelled Anglican/Evangelical/Pentecostal/Charismatic/Contemplative, as all those have influenced my walk with God. My views of him have changed a great deal over the years. He has become much bigger, more loving, more merciful, caring, closer and more precious as time passed and I receive more of his wonderful grace.

My interests are mainly books and writing, gardening, the natural world and the environment, grandchildren, family and friends, meeting people, travel. Before marriage I helped in my parents' farming business and studied child care. Since, I've worked with my husband in various enterprises and raised my family, and I wrote all the time, selling my first story at 21, but later also selling something I'd written at 16. I write fiction and non-fiction, mostly for children and young people.”

They really are both excellent stories!

We have had a surprising number of things going wrong with the production of these two books - the proofs were made up with the wrong typeface so had to be re-done. The new proofs were then lost in the post - Special Delivery (guaranteed next day delivery before 1pm) eventually arrived eight days late - all of these things making us behind in our schedule. Several people lost their internet connection for a while during all this, making communication difficult, and I was on holiday! To top all this, Eleanor Watkins, author of the Beech Bank Girls series, has been quite unwell. I feel the Lord is going to use these two new books (and all our others!) and perhaps this is opposition – please do keep praying for everyone involved. Thank you!
